Why Athletes Need A Life Coach

This will probably not be the last time that I write about this subject, as a matter of fact I can guarantee that it won’t be the last. As long as athletes continue to make the wrong decisions, I will always have a business. I think that every professional athlete needs a life coach because their decision making skills are horrible. I will provide examples as I continue. Let’s look at the facts. Every athlete is coddled and told they are going to be the greatest in their respective sport. The athlete begins to believe his/her own press clippings. Once they get to the pros, they believe they are invincible. The psyche of an athlete is something that I study on a regular basis because I found that it is this belief of invincibility that skews their ability to make decisions.

Let me explain what I am talking about, does everyone remember Michael Vick. He probably never thought he would get arrested and convicted for dog fighting. What about Donte Stallworth? He was driving drunk in Miami and killed a pedestrian. Yes, it was an accident, but he made the decision to drive while under the influence. Michael Irvin in 2005 was arrested and charged for possession of cocaine. The late Steve McNair was arrested in 2003 for driving under the influence in Tennessee. Carmelo Anthony was arrested in April 2008 for driving drunk. Ron Artest was arrested and charged with domestic violence and using force to keep a victim from reporting a crime. I know your saying, but Ron Artest is crazy, that still does not excuse him from making bonehead decisions. In 2004, Kobe Bryant was arrested for sexually assaulting a woman in Colorado. Ray Lewis was charged with murder for the death of two men at the Super Bowl in 2000. Jason Kidd was arrested for domestic abuse in 2001 and there other countless examples of professional athletes in trouble. Most recently, Big Ben Roethlisberger is being accused of sexually assaulting a woman. Where does it end?

If athletes had accountability in their life, I think it would make a difference in the decisions that they make on a daily basis. Most of these guys have never been taught life skills. By life skills, I mean decision making, organization, time management, or how to avoid the pitfalls of life. I am tired of seeing athletes be exposed because of lack of judgement. As a life coach my desire is to work with these men and women to help them succeed outside of their particular sport. They have a god given talent to do well in their respective sport, but everybody needs help in certain areas of their life. I understand the lifestyle of a pro athlete, but I don’t think the athlete understands the ramifications of life.

I think the leagues are starting to get the picture and they are making strides to help these athletes make better decisions. For example, the NFL uses the rookie symposium to give the rookies an up close view of some of the things they are going to face as a star athlete in the pros. They bring in speakers that have an expertise in certain areas to provide wisdom on how to manage and avoid situations. One life coach in particular is Zach Minor. Zach, like me is a life coach trying to provide life skills to men that desperately need our help. I think it may take time, but there is hope.

Americans Increase Saving

Prior to this recession, Americans actually spent more than they saved. Our savings rate was approximately -0.6% at the end of 2008 and we have since rebounded to save more than we actually spend. The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) is reporting that the personal savings rate has increased to approximately +4.25%. I’m not sold on this number. It doesn’t mean that people aren’t spending, I just think people are unsure about what may happen in the economy. People are worried about their jobs and their families and they are just saving. Maybe they aren’t saving under their mattress like they did during the depression, but they are putting more earned income into the banks. Our savings rate is still relatively low compared to other countries like China. The Chinese have a savings rate of +40%, which allows them to buy our debt because their financial institutions have more money to lend.

This country’s blueprint has been destroyed by borrowing and it has affected our blueprint. We are slaves to the lenders. The Chinese own us, the Saudi government will own us for energy if don’t spending $1.3 billion a day on importing oil. We have to start saving as a way of life. We need to revert back to lay a way and other old fashion plans. We need to decrease instant gratification for better opportunities in the future. What will we teach our children about money and savings. We need to start saving for them right now and train them to save for what they want.

My oldest daughter is being taught how to save money for the things that she wants as opposed to us buying it for her. We are instilling in her the principle of patience and delayed gratification. She will carry this lesson into adulthood, where she will realize that it is more important to save than to spend. The Chinese teach their children to save, shouldn’t we lead the way?

African Americans Are Most Obese Group

I just read something that was very disturbing to me as an individual and as a life coach. Based on a new study, done by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. According to the study, nearly 36% of African Americans are obese, more than any other ethnic or racial group in the country. The CDC study experts believe that there are reasons for the differences. Some of the differences pointed out that lower income individuals are more likely to have less access to medical care, work out facilities, and healthier food options. I can’t say that I disagree with this, however I see people whose economic status is not an issue that are obese on a regular basis. I choose not to accept those excuses offered by the CDC. I’d like to have a discussion with the readers of this blog to come up with reasons for why African Americans are more obese than any other group and also to help develop education for people to teach them about their Body Mass Index and how it affects their weight.

As a physiology major my first three years in college, I know the importance of nutrition and working out on a consistent basis. Diabetes, heart disease, and many other diseases have been linked to obesity. I believe that African Americans have to do a better job. I was recently at a family reunion and there were at least 150 people in attendance and over half the room was overweight. What can we do to change the statistics, better yet, change people’s blueprint? The mission of this blog is to help people to discover a new blueprint, one that creates balance in their life through health, relationships, finances, work, and their career.

Financially Speaking

Where, when, and how do we learn how to manage money? Is it taught in the education system? I think we can all agree that the answer to that is, no. In the 1990′s and the early 2000′s more Americans filed for bankruptcy than at any period of time in history. That surge led former President George W. Bush to sign the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Protection Act on April 20, 2005. Fast forward to 2009 and in May there were approximately 6,000 bankruptcy filings a day. So I ask again, where does our financial blueprint come from?

We tend to learn about money from our parents, friends, and the media. In addition to that we have become a country of instant gratification. We as Americans want what we want on the spot. We no longer have to adhere to Grandmom’s words of wisdom, “save for a rainy day.” Can we all agree that the mess that we are in right now is because we didn’t save for a rainy day? We have heard the saying, live on less than you make? I’ve heard it too and I ignored it and have paid the penalty for it, but never again will I expose my family or I too the risk that I did in the past. My blueprint has been changed!

How do we get out of a rut? How do you change your blueprint? Well the bible says in Romans 12:2 that we have to renew our mind. We need to get the junk out and replace it with the correct information. Learning about managing your personal finances is the same exact thing. When I graduated from college, I cleaned up my credit and my wife’s credit too. I was a man possessed, but I didn’t have understanding behind what I was doing. I read all the books, “Automatic Millionaire,” and “Young Fabulous and Broke,” but I didn’t have an understanding behind what I was doing. My blueprint wasn’t changed until I heard of a man named Dave Ramsey. Dave helped me change my entire thinking about money. I took a course called Financial Peace University that has changed the way my family and I look at money. It is going to save us from making a major mistake moving forward. I now understand that when I use a credit card that, “the rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.” My blueprint has been forever changed. I am now a certified financial counselor helping people change their blueprint forever.

What can you do right now to change your course financially? First things first, it is never to late to start. Even if you have been through bankruptcy already, there is still hope. You need to have faith that everything is going to be ok. The next step is to work out a healthy financial plan that includes a monthly cash flow plan. After that you need to start saving immediately and get away from the dependency on credit cards and equity loans to survive.

Lastly, we all love our parents and friends, but if our goals and dreams are larger than our friends and family, shouldn’t we invest the time to change our blueprint? Isn’t our blueprint more important to the legacy of our future family members than anything else? We are not exempt from living a prosperous lifestyle, but we can do it without debt attached to our name.

Can’t Believe Michael Jackson is Gone!

I’m late to acknowledge that the King of Pop has passed away, but I wanted to take some time to reflect on how Michael Jackson has made an impact on me.

ThrillerI grew up in West Germany and as a kid and there wasn’t many options for music. Michael Jackson was the only music that I had to listen while I was overseas. When I returned state side, that is when Michael released the Bad album and I thought “Bad” was the greatest song ever. I am grateful that I had a chance to witness Michael in his prime, doing the thing that he was most passionate about.

As an adult and father, I started passing on Michael’s music before his death to my four year daughter because his music was so influential and timeless that it didn’t matter how old you were when you heard Michael, but that you tried to imitate Michael on the dance floor and sing it the same way that he did in his videos.

As a singer and performer, Michael was absolutely the best. His personal life was subject to many obstacles and adversaties that made it hard for him to overcome. I was never a fan of the multiple surgical procedures that he had done to his face or the public court battles regarding him allegedly having children sleep in his with him. That would freak me out! One thing for sure though, Michael sure was talented. He could make a hit with anyone. It is that talent that we will miss the most.

RIP MJ
